Monkeypox is a viral infectious zoonotic disease .It is caused by a virus which belongs to the genus ORTHOPOXVIRUS-closely related to smallpox virus.It spreads from animals to humans through exposure to infected meat or through bites.The classical symptoms may include. 1.Rashes that form blisters. 2.Fever. 3.Lymph node swelling. But in the current outbreak,some patients have had only a single leshion in the mouth or on the genitals.The current strains are B.1 and A.2.The time-period from exposure to symptom appearance ranges from 4 to 21 days.The disease appears more serious for Children,pregnant women and immune compromised subjects.
The virus was first identified in 1958 among laboratory monkeys in Copenhagen, Denmark and the first human case was recorded in Democratic Republic Of Congo in 1970.The risk of death vary from 1 to 10 pc. The first case in United Kingdom was detected on 6 May 2022.The individual had travelled to Nigeria -It is endemic there. In India,the first case was reported on 14 July 2022 in Kerala.India was the first country in South Asia to report a Monkeypox case.Diagnosis can be done by testing lesion for the viruses DNA.Two vaccines have been approved in the US,JVNNEOS and ACAM2000.Regular hand washing and avoiding sick people and animals may help in preventing ourselves from the disease..Antiviral drugs like Cidofovir and Tecovirimat may be used during outbreaks.
